1877年のはじめに、モネはサン=ラザール駅を描いた作品に取り掛かりました。ここは、モネにとってなじみのアルジャントゥイユなど、パリの西郊外やノルマンディー地方に向かう列車の発着駅なのです。モネは、駅に絶え間なく溢れる活力に魅了され、あっという間に描きあげました。数カ月後に開かれた第3回印象派展には、それぞれ異なった角度でサン=ラザール駅を捉えた8点の作品を出品しています。この作品で画家が描き出そうと努めているのは、駅に入ってくる機関車の姿。もくもくと吐き出される蒸気がガラス張りの大屋根に満ちていこうとする瞬間です。蒸気の渦が列車の周りに広がり、わたしたちの目前に迫って来るようです。蒸気の白と機関車の黒がコントラストを形作っています。機関車からは、鋭い汽笛が聞こえてくるようです。
In early 1877, Monet began working on paintings depicting Saint-Lazare Station in Paris. This station was the departure point for trains bound for the western suburbs of Paris, including Argenteuil, as well as to Normandy, another place that Monet knew well. Captivated by the station’s unceasing vitality, Monet completed these paintings rapidly. Several months later, he exhibited eight of these works at the third Impressionist exhibition. Each painting captured the station from a different perspective. In the work shown here, Monet attempted to portray the arrival of a locomotive at the station. The painting captures the moment when billowing clouds of steam fill the space beneath the vast glass roof. The swirling steam spreads around the train and seems to be rushing toward the viewer. The white of the steam and the black of the locomotive create a striking contrast. The scene is so vivid that you can almost hear the locomotive’s sharp whistle.
