モネの友人で小説家・批評家のオクターヴ・ミルボーは、こう記し、作品を称賛しています。「太陽のふりそそぐ丘陵…を、しなやかに、軽やかに、重さを感じさせず、ひとりの女性が進んでいく。…奥行きを感じさせる線描は、たぐい稀な優美さ、精緻さ、感性と、デッサンのスケールの大きさを兼ね備え、実に見事で驚くべきものがある。」モデルは、モネの支援者エルネスト・オシュデとアリス夫妻の三女シュザンヌです。モネは先妻カミーユを1879年に亡くしますが、その後、エルネストと死別していたアリスがモネのパートナーとなり、ふたりは1892年に結婚します。モデルのシュザンヌは、光と大気に包まれており、あらゆるものが震動しているようです。モネは人物そのものではなく、彼が「包み込むもの」と呼んだ、戸外の効果によって変化する、風景の中の人物像に関心を示しているのです。

Monet's friend, the novelist and critic Octave Mirbeau, wrote the following in praise of this work: "On a sunlit hillside, [...] a woman makes her way, slender, light, imponderable, [...] The drawn lines, which evoke a sense of depth, possess a rare elegance, precision, and sensitivity, combined with the grand scale of the drawing itself, making it truly magnificent and astonishing." The model is Suzanne, the third daughter of Ernest and Alice Hoschedé. Ernest was a patron of Monet’s. After Monet’s first wife Camille passed away in 1879, Alice became his partner, and they married in 1892 after Ernest’s death. In this painting, the model Suzanne, appears to be enveloped by the light and atmosphere, as if the entire scene was vibrating. Monet was not interested in the figure itself, but rather in the image of a person within the landscape, transformed by the outdoor effects. He referred to this concept as l'enveloppe, meaning "an atmospheric envelope."
