The view that held little interest for Monet when he first visited London in the early 1870s was later to capture his heart at the turn of the century. This work depicts the Palace of Westminster, commonly known as the Houses of Parliament and one of London's most iconic buildings, dominated by the Victoria Tower, seen from the opposite bank of the Thames. In this picture, everything is losing its substance and dissolving into the sunset. While the building remains recognizable, the artist has made several alterations. For instance, the proportions of the tower have been elongated. The play of sunlight reflected on the Thames lends this painting a dreamlike character. After returning to his home in Giverny, Monet spent the next four years revising the works he painted in London, as well as completing several new landscapes. He then exhibited the series of 37 paintings at the Galerie Durand-Ruel, Paris in 1904.
